Sunrise at the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge

Golden fall foliage lines the rocky edge of the Cape Cod Canal, perfectly framing both the vertical lift Sunrise Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and the arched Bourne Bridge over the morning mist.

Late autumn sunrise at the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge. I got up early and made my way to Academy Drive near the Maritime Academy, hoping to catch first light on the bridge and the canal. After some map scouting and light-angle planning the night before, this spot seemed like the best vantage point for sunrise—and it didn’t disappoint.

As the sun began to rise, fog rolled over the canal, creating a calm, almost eerie atmosphere. The fog softened the sharp lines of the bridge and muted the colors of the shoreline. A lone tugboat made its way slowly through the water, bringing a bit of life to an otherwise quiet morning.

After spending some time here, I headed over to the Buzzards Bay Recreation Area for another perspective. I shot from a few angles on the ground and then put the drone up for a wider look at the fog, bridge, and calm water. Funny enough, I almost skipped this area entirely, but I’m glad I didn’t. The fog was still hanging over the water. For a few minutes, everything lined up just right—soft light, slow motion, and a quiet canal waking up for the day.

A spot I’ll definitely return to. Enjoy the photos!
