Exploring South Weymouth Naval Air Station by air offers a glimpse into the site’s rich history. The Naval Air Station (NAS) South Weymouth operated as a U.S. Navy airfield from 1942 to 1997. The Navy initially set it up during World War II as their northeastern blimp station. After the war, they briefly decommissioned the site but renewed its activity in the early 1950s when they moved the Naval Air Reserve Training Program from the Squantum airbase to South Weymouth.
Today, the area is gradually developing, with the latest addition being Union Point, a 1,400-acre Smart Growth development on the site. The site also offers ideal locations for recreational activities like biking, walking, and flying model aircraft, with many paths and wide-open spaces making it a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
