Anchor Lot

A black and white photo of the historic Liberty Grill restaurant in Hingham, Massachusetts, a two-story wooden building at a street intersection with a crosswalk in the foreground.

I’ve driven by this place in Hingham, Massachusetts, more times than I can count. It’s a building that seems to sit right in the road, as if the town had to bend to make room for it. I never knew what it was, only that it always caught my eye.

Something about it felt different. It turns out the oldest part dates back to 1643 as the town’s grain mill. Another section was added in 1726, and over time it became a restaurant—first Ye Olde Mill Grille, later the Liberty Grille. During World War II, it was a favorite spot for British navy crews waiting to board ships at the nearby Hingham Shipyard.

Learning all that made me glad. That quiet pull I felt each time wasn’t just in my head. It’s a reminder to trust your instincts—sometimes, the places that catch your eye really do have a story worth discovering.
