A few days ago, I returned to Scituate Lighthouse for a sunrise shoot. As I reviewed my shots later, I realized the position of the rising sun at this time of year offers a perfect opportunity to align it with the dome, creating a striking composition that symbolizes the light within. I immediately made plans to return and attempt this shot.

I captured this view from Museum Beach, though parking can be tricky since the only nearby option is the private lot at Scituate Harbor Yacht Club—park at your own risk. If you go, it’s essential to bring a long lens of at least 200mm and a sturdy tripod.

This visit reminded me of Eliot Porter’s belief that every time we revisit a place, it’s different because we’re different. The changing seasons and even my own mindset revealed new possibilities I hadn’t seen before. With a bit of planning and an open mind, familiar locations can offer unexpected opportunities for fresh and striking compositions.
